The county is set to go to the polling stations on May 4 to decide who will take the all-important seats at Cambridgeshire County Council for the next four years. Here are the candidates for the Ely South division.

Anna Bailey – Conservative – Ely South

Anna Bailey has lived locally all her life. She has been a district councillor at East Cambs for 10 years and one of Ely’s two county councillors since 2013.

She previously ran a business supporting local authorities all over the UK in the field of adult social care.

She opposed the car parking charges in Ely and believes in keeping Council Tax low.

She helped deliver East Cambs’ flatter, efficient management structure.

She worked for the Ely bypass, and is campaigning hard for a major upgrade to the A10 between at least Littleport and Cambridge; last year she won a motion to enable work on route options and a business case be done.

Rebecca Denness – Labour – Ely South

Rebecca says her family has lived in Ely for 13 years from where she commuted to work in London and Cambridge.

“I have a public service background working at The National Archives and more recently, in education policy at a regional level,” she says.

“As parent to two children being educated in Ely, I have received letters from their schools explaining how they will cope with real-terms cuts delivered by the latest version of the schools funding formula.”

She plans to combine this commitment to speak up for local schools with her experience from working in regional government.

“With this know-how, I can ensure Ely South has a more effective voice,” she says.

Christine Whelan – Lib Dem – Ely South

Christine has lived locally since 2000 when she moved here with her partner before their daughter was born.

Christine was elected to the city council in May 2015 and serves on the recreation cemetery committee and the youth forum.

She is a trustee of Pride in Ely, an LGBT+ support group.

Christine works in early years education and is passionate about ensuring that every child is given the best start in life. Her priorities are proper funding and support for schools, better health and social care, and equality and diversity issues.

She is also a volunteer with Centre 33, whose aim is to give support to young people in Ely.

She is wedded to her party’s commitments that tackle communities; environment; health and social care; education and skills; travel & transport; jobs and growth.

There is also a section on improving participation and decision making.
