The county is set to go to the polling stations on May 4 to decide who will take the all-important seats at Cambridgeshire County Council for the next four years. Here are the candidates for the Littleport division.

David Ambrose-Smith – Conservative

David was born and educated in Littleport. His career as a design engineer saw him taking on an operations directorship.

David took time out and spent a year working at Highpoint Prison, setting up a drugs rehabilitation unit, before returning to design within the animal welfare industry.

He is now semi-retired, running a business importing a niche market product from America.

In the mid 1970s David restarted the Scout movement in Littleport which continues to thrive today.

A founder member of the Rotary Club of Littleport, twice President, he with other members has raised over £300k for local, national & international projects.

A parish and district councillor he was instrumental in acquiring land for the station car park.

He is involved in various other organisations including chairman of trustees and Littleport Leisure, where is working to ensure it becomes a sustainable organisation, embracing the whole community.

Jane Frances – Labour

Jane is a policy adviser for a leading charity, working and living locally.

“My education work involves dealing with legislation and using research plus teachers’ and families’ personal experience to devise solutions that are practical, effective and affordable,” she says.

“I offer these skills and experience to help maintain and improve the ordinary things that matter so much in and around Littleport at this time of cuts, through addressing transport, environment and community issues with fresh energy and determination.”

Labour is promising to make the county council a provider of affordable homes for sale and rent to alleviate the housing crisis. They are keen to put the council at the heart of providing education and upskilling.

Martin Seidel – Lib Dem

German born Martin moved to this country 12 years ago - is established here and now wants to be a county councillor.

Martin has lived in and around Ely for most of his time in the UK, He works as a business change manager for Cambridge Assessment, a non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge.

“As a councillor, I would work hard on making sure that the people and communities become better connected again and have easier and more frequent access to the vital service they need,” he says.

“From the desperately needed improvements to public transport, to the on-going efforts by the Liberal Democrats for better educational opportunities, there is much that I want to work on.”
