An elderly couple from Norfolk have been killed in a crash in Lincolnshire.

The couple, in their 80s, were killed when their green Volvo collided with a lorry on the A17 near Boston on Monday.

Emergency services, including eight police cars, four fire engines and the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene at 12pm on the A17 at the Bicker Bar roundabout, seven miles from Boston town centre.

A HGV driver, who was one of the first at the scene, told Lincolnshirelive that he had watched in horror as the crash occurred.

Lee Bacon, 40, slammed on his brakes and watched on as the Volvo was involved in a head-on collision with the lorry before flipping upside down.

He said the front of the car had caught fire, so he ran to a nearby tanker which was carrying water and put out the flames.

'I saw the Volvo and I thought 'no, no, no'.

'I could see something bad was about to happen,' said Mr Bacon.

He tried to get to the couple alongside others who had stopped at the crash but the pair were pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple have not been named but next of kin have been informed.

In the aftermath of the crash, police had warned people to avoid the area.

The road was closed at the B1397 junction for a number of hours and reopened at 9pm.

The A17 is designated as 'red route' meaning it is one of the most dangerous roads in Lincolnshire.

There are signs along the route, which stretches from Newark to King's Lynn, warning drivers to take care and stating how many people have been involved in crashes in the past.

Earlier this year average speed cameras were installed on the A17 from just north of the Pullover Roundabout, on the outskirts of King's Lynn, and Sutton Bridge on the Norfolk/Lincolnshire border due to a high collision history on the road.

Casualties on the single-lane stretch are twice the national average, with known blackspots including the African Violet junction near Terrington St Clement.
