The White Ribbon campaign comes to Ely after council agree to support its mission to end male violence against women

A local council which has pledged to work hard to prevent violence and harassment against women in the workplace has won accreditation for its proactive stance.
East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) unveiled their ‘White Ribbon’ plaque, which has taken pride of place in the reception of the council offices.
White Ribbon, whose mission is to end male violence against women, work with men and boys to challenge male cultures that lead to harassment and abuse.
Councillor Anna Bailey, chair of the regulatory services committee and deputy leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have been given this plaque to showcase our support to White Ribbon.
“This accreditation shows that the council is taking even more steps to keep women safe from abuse and educating men and boys across the district.
“We look forward to seeing the rest of the action plan come into force over the next year.”
The organisation invites men and women alike to take the White Ribbon pledge and become an ambassador or a champion.
Councillor David Ambrose Smith, chair of community services at ECDC said: “It’s brilliant to see the council showing support to this fantastic campaign alongside the steps they already have in place.
“We hope to see every organisation in the UK supporting White Ribbon to end domestic abuse.”
East Cambridgeshire District Council have shown their support by producing a dedicated action plan which involves implementing a domestic abuse policy for all staff employed by the council, as well as engaging with local businesses to inform men about White Ribbon.
Work is already underway and will be taking place over the next year.
White Ribbon report that according to 2017 crime figures from the Crown Prosecution Service, six out of seven victims of domestic violence are women.
East Cambridgeshire District Council are one of 86 organisations to have pledged to back White Ribbon UK.
