Would you be willing to spend a penny to use public loos? - That's the question set to be asked by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The local authority looks likely to consult on the possibility of charging for public conveniences - except those in Fountain Lane, Soham - across the district.

A review has been carried out of the area’s public toilets to investigate all options including improving existing facilities and introducing charging for these facilities.

The final improvement plan will be considered by the council’s commercial services committee in September but a public consultation needs to be carried out first to ensure that improving the existing facilities and introducing charges is a viable and achievable option.

Members are expected to approve the public consultation at Tuesday’s (July 28) meeting of the commercial services committee.

A report to the meeting points out: “It is important to not that improving the facilities and introducing charging is only one of the options that is being considered. This consultation will enable a full and proper options appraisal to be compiled for consideration by members in September 2015.”
