DRUNK Alan Evans refused to back off from police after headbutting a man in Ely's Fore Hill.
Officers warned him several times to 'get back' and finally sprayed CS gas into his face before arresting him, a court heard.
But Evans was so drunk he cannot remember the incident and only recalls the gas stinging his eyes.
Officers were called to the city centre after Evans, 28, of The Old Cottage, Brandon Creek, was seen on CCTV camera grappling with a man.
They saw Evans walk in front of their police car and headbutt another man.
Police pushed Evans away from the injured man but he walked towards the officers and ignored warnings to back off.
On Tuesday Evans appeared before Ely Magistrates where he admitted affray on February 11.
Road worker Evans told police in an interview that he couldn't remember much of the evening except dancing at Club Zest. He told the magistrates he was sorry.
The court heard he had previous convictions including one for assault two years ago.
Chairman of the magistrates, Ian Kerr, said: "This sort of behaviour on an evening when drink was significantly involved is not acceptable. This can be an imprisonable offence."
Magistrates adjourned the case until March 9 for a pre-sentence report.
