CCTV operators watched in horror as Jessica Green drove her car around Ely Market Place with a teenager clinging to the bonnet.

The youngster's legs were swinging as the car turned in circles around the pedestrian area, while a group of teenagers watched the spectacle.

Green accelerated her 55-registered Vauxhall Astra and then stopped suddenly, with the person on the bonnet still clinging to the vehicle.

"I was horrified at the driver being so reckless," CCTV operator Andrew Wilmore told police.

Green had driven from Market Place, around bollards and on to the market square, Ely magistrates were told by prosecutor Matthew Bradbury.

When it stopped, several teenagers approached the vehicle, and several people got out of the car. One of the teenagers climbed on the bonnet and hung on as it drove around in circles, as five or six teenagers stood around. When the teenager got off the car, another person carrying a football got on to the vehicle.

Officers dispatched to the scene found Green driving in Back Hill, and she was followed to Parade Lane.

When asked why she had been driving in an anti-social manner, the 20-year-old replied: "I was being sociable, I was making everyone laugh."

She had driven around in circles because an unknown "chavvy" had instructed her to do it, she explained.

She had been driving at just five mph, and there had been no one nearby.

Five passengers had been carried in her car earlier that evening, she said, including one person in the boot.

Green, of Kingfisher Drive, Soham, failed to attend Ely courthouse, and was convicted of careless driving in her absence.

Magistrates were told she was "a disqualification waiting to happen," and sentencing was adjourned until April 5.
