OPPORTUNIST thieves in East Cambridgeshire are being left treasure troves by motorists in the area.

Over recent weeks there has been a spate of vehicle crime in Ely, Soham, Littleport and the surrounding areas.

Officers are now urging people to review the security of their vehicle in order to help police reduce the problem.

Sergeant Lindsay Harbour said: "Patrols have been increased in hotspot areas and investigations are underway to trace those responsible for the recent spate.

"If we are to really make a difference we need the public's help.

"I would urge everyone to ensure they remove all valuables from their vehicle before leaving it unattended.

"For the opportunist thief the smaller item on display can be a temptation and if people continue to leave valuable items in their vehicles the problem will continue."

To reduce the risk of being a victim:

n Do not leave property in your vehicle when leaving it unattended.

n Lock your vehicle.

n Leave the glove box empty and open to show that you have not hidden any valuables inside.

n Never leave a car running unattended to de-ice your vehicle.

People are also encouraged to register their property free at www.immobilise.com to help identify your property should it be stolen.

Anyone with information relating to vehicle crime should contact police on 0845 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
