DRIVER John Burrells crashed his sister's car into a fence and left the scene of the accident before police arrived.
But just after Burrells, 22, arrived home at Orchard Way, Burwell, three officers were on his doorstep.
His actions landed him in Ely Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he admitted failing to stop after an accident and driving with no insurance.
Further charges of failing to report an accident and failing to produce an insurance certificate were withdrawn.
The court heard that Burrells was driving his sister's Renault Clio car on November 18 last year when he crashed into a fence in Ness Road, Burwell.
The owner of the land looked out of his window and saw Burrells try to reverse away from the fence before stumbling out of the car and leaving the scene.
Burrells told the court that, as he had no mobile phone with him, he decided to head home to his sister rather than wake up residents in the road where the accident happened.
He said that previously he had been insured to drive his car and thought he was on this occasion.
"It was a stupid mistake," he said. "I realise now I should have reported the accident."
Burrells was fined a total of £400 with £35 costs and had his licence endorsed with nine points.
His sister, Michelle, of the same address, has admitted allowing her car to be used without insurance. Her case was adjourned until June 20.
