STARTLED police officers almost collided with a motorist who was driving perilously close to oncoming traffic on the A142 near Ely.

Krzysztof Pilat was driving his Audi car towards the city at about 2.15am on May 8 when he was spotted by officers as he drifted over the white line and into their path.

After avoiding the Audi, the officers quickly turned their vehicle around and caught up with 29-year-old Pilat before pulling him over.

After taking a sample of breath at the side of the road, Pilat was taken back Parkside Police Station in Cambridge where a second reading revealed 66 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Appearing at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Pilat, of Little Whyte, Ramsey, Hunts was disqualified from driving in the UK for 18 months and was fined �250. He was also ordered to pay �85 costs and a �15 victim surcharge.
