ACTING on a tip-off from the public, police stopped drink-driver Andrew Rayner just as he had pulled his car onto the driveway of his Burwell home.

Officers received a call from a member of the public shortly after midnight on May 22 as Rayner was leaving the ex-servicemen’s club in Burwell.

They were told that the 44-year-old may have been over the limit and carried out a brief search of the surrounding area in the hope of finding the vehicle. After initially having no luck, the police eventually decided to head to Rayner’s home, as he was listed as the keeper.

They arrived just in time to see Rayner, of Ness Road, pulling his car onto the driveway and they quickly moved in.

Rayner was breathalysed and gave a reading of 62 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35micrograms.

In mitigation the 44-year-old told the court: “I know it was a stupid thing to do and it was a total one-off.

“It was done simply because I had my children with me and my son was feeling very unwell.”

Pleading guilty at Cambridge Magistrates Court on Thursday, Rayner was disqualified from driving for 17 months, fined 100 and ordered to pay 85 court costs.
