A pizza take away has created chaos since opening just three weeks ago in Soham, according to a resident, who says lorries and delivery drivers are dangerously blocking the road.

In addition, a burglar alarm rang from Christmas Eve to December 27 which ruined the peace over the festive season for local residents who struggled to sleep through the noise.

Dominos is the sixth pizza house in the town, said Dave Dawkins, and already it is causing problems.

The former bakery was given planning permission last year as it was considered “almost a like for like change of use” by Andrew Connolly, senior transport officer at the county council highways team.

But Mr Dawkins said: “Highways should have seen the problems coming. One day the road blocking was so bad that the bus could not safely stop to pick up passengers.

“I have been stuck inside my home for an hour and a half as the lorry was blocking the way.

“Every other day a class two lorry parks in front of my building and blocks from one metre away from the White Hart Lane junction, this is really dangerous.

“I have told police but it seems there is not much they can do.

“When parked up one end of the delivery lorry is at the pedestrian crossing by the Poppies fish and chip shop entrance.

“They park on double yellows so should only be for short time unloading, yet it takes up to an hour and a half as it is just one man.

“I approached Dominos but because it is a franchise it is like nobody wants to take responsibility.

“I warned about parking problems when planning permission was requested but nobody took any notice.

“Cambridgeshire County Council Highways did not seem to foresee the problems yet it is near a three way junction of Churchgate Street, Fountain Lane, Whitehart Lane

“It feels like residents have been ridden over rough shod and there is not much we can do about it.

“To top it off Christmas was ruined as the alarm went off from Christmas Eve until December 27. It went for 38 minutes every two hours and some poor local member of staff kept having to come out to reset it, but they’re were told they were not allowed to switch if off.”

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “As part of the planning process we look at the transport impact in the area.

“In this application for a new Dominos in Soham, we found there have not been any recorded injury-related accidents at the junction in the past five years and parking restrictions such as double yellow lines and no stopping signs were already in place.

“As this premises already had a commercial licence there were no reasons for us to object to the proposal.”

A spokesman for Dominos said: “We instruct our drivers to drive carefully and park safely in between deliveries, and we will reiterate to them the importance of being courteous on the road.

“We expect our drivers to act responsibly at all times in accordance with Domino’s safe driving policy.”

“Upon hearing that the fire alarm was arbitrarily ringing when the store was closed, our Area Manager arrived quickly to the store to turn it off. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
