An Isleham army veteran who lost his leg in a tank accident will cycle 100 miles to raise money for charity this weekend.
Wayne Harrod is to take on the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 challenge on Sunday to raise money for The Poppy Factory, which offers employment support to disabled veterans and helped him after he left the forces following his below-knee amputation in 2011.
He said: “Four years ago I wouldn’t be able to do this. I wouldn’t have the understanding on how to go on in life or to be pushed in the right direction.
“I’m doing this because I can, it’s the right time and I want to help others.”
The ride will see 25,000 cyclists travel from the Queen Elizabeth Park, through Richmond Park and the Surrey Hills before finishing at The Mall in central London.
The Poppy Factory helped Wayne find a job as a gardener at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
“If there is a disabled veteran out there who is unaware of what their next step is going to be, then to do the ride, knowing the help it’s going to give other veterans in a dark place, why wouldn’t I do it for The Poppy Factory?,” Wayne added.
