A DILAPIDATED building in the heart of Ely's historic conservation area is to be demolished after four years of bitter complaint.

The Market Street building, formerly a grocer's shop, has been the subject of district council enforcement action and owner John Borland must now begin work by the end of March to avoid legal action.

Mr Borland has told the district council planning committee this week that work will begin on February 19, when half of Market Street taxi rank will be closed to accommodate the hoardings for the building.

Planning committee member, Councillor Gareth Wilson said: "It's been an eyesore and a horrible mess for a long time, but Mr Borland has said he is going to do the work in a couple of weeks' time, so we look forward to it.
