A HELPLESS young deer had to be cut free by fire-fighters after it was found wedged between iron railings.
The deer, a young muntjac, was discovered on Thursday evening (June 18) caught between the railings at a house in Egremont Street, Ely, by local fireman Darren Fox, who called on colleagues at the nearby fire station.
By the time crews arrived with specialist cutting equipment, a crowd had formed around the deer, which had injured its leg in its struggle to free itself.
Fire-fighters wedged the equipment between the iron bars and managed to free the deer, before a vet arrived to check the creature for any lasting damage.
Fortunately, save for a cut on the leg and a few jangled nerves, the deer was given a clean bill of health and is expected to be set free from the vet's soon.
Ely Fire Station manager Brett Mills, said: "I'd like to thank everyone who stopped and helped, with a particular thanks to the members of the public and staff at Cathedral Veterinary Centre.
