ON Friday, a party from the group Day Out East, led by Ella Thurmott, visited Castle Acre in Norfolk. The first site was the Saxon tower church at Newton-by Castle Acre. This is a very simple church with 20th Century church furniture in memory of a local family. Coffee at the nearby George and Dragon pub preceded the visit to Castle Acre Priory, the remains of the finest Cluniac monastery in England.

The lunch break gave the opportunity to explore the town, which was originally walled. Then visits to the castle and St James' Parish Church took place, followed by tea.
