Thirty-three trailers, 52 cars and six flatbed lorries were stopped in Sutton during just one day last week.

Officers from the Rural Crime Action Team, HM Revenue and Customs and the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency were involved in the day of action on Monday May 9.

Two of the vehicles were found to be running on red diesel and officers also recovered a stolen trailer.

DC Cass Bennett from the RCAT team said: “It was a successful operation and it should help to improve safety on the roads for all the law abiding users of the highway.

“This type of work is an ongoing priority for us and we have more days of action planned that will take place throughout the county.”

Officers also dealt with two motorists using mobile phones at the wheel, two not wearing seatbelts, one unsafe load, one vehicle with tinted windows, a vehicle with no insurance that was seized and another vehicle with no MOT.

A further vehicle was taken off the road for being unsafe while another vehicle was pulled up for having a bald tyre.
