Youngsters took the opportunity to dress as fire-fighters during a recent open day at Ely fire station.

They tried on uniforms and got a chance to use hoses during the first open day in eight years at the newly-refurbished station.

Firefighters, assisted by paramedics and police officers, staged a mock road accident during the event to give the public an insight into their work.

More than 250 people watched demonstrations by firecrews and Ely Standard supported Magpas first responder scheme, which is currently looking for volunteers.

There were also vintage fire engine displays.

Ely fire station commander Ady Slack said the event was a success. "I'd like to pass on my thanks to the local police and ambulance stations for their help and several shops and Ely Cathedral for donating raffle prizes."

The event raised a total of £350, which will be split between a local charity and the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.
