MAJOR international companies could be coming to Sutton as plans for a hi tech data centre creating 1,000 jobs are revealed.

The new centre, designed as a modern business park, would give individual companies the opportunity to store all their customer data and legal documents on one site.

Developers Lasercharm are confident the centre at the Elean Business Park will prove attractive for big firms wanting cheaper accommodation than they can find in London or even New York.

The buildings, ranging in size from 50,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet will look similar to Ely's Cambridgeshire Business Park and cover a total of 650,000 square feet.

Planning permission was granted on the site in August 2003 to previous owners for a 2.2 million square feet data centre.

But the new buildings will cover a third of the size and exhibitions of the plans will take place in Sutton and Mepal in January.

Alex Arthur, of Lasercharm, said: "We are delighted that, with the assistance of modern technology, we have been able to reduce the size of the data centre so significantly and yet it will still create a large number of new jobs."

If planning permission is granted work could start on the new centre in the Spring.
