Firefighters were called to tackle a crop fire in Ely as temperatures soared on Wednesday.

One crew from Ely arrived at a field off West Fen Road, at about 12.30pm to find an area of waste crop on fire, which was spreading to a nearby field.

They extinguished the fire using a hose reel and beaters and returned to their station by 1.45pm. The cause of the fire was accidental.

The mercury peaked at 27 degrees centigrade in Ely on Wednesday, making it one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Temperatures are expected to hit 30 by Friday.
