A promised crackdown on crime and anti social behaviour is delivering results, say East Cambridgeshire Police.

The village has been given extra attention in recent weeks following a spate of criminal activity that led to the drawing up of an action plan agreed on by police, villagers and partner organisations.

Police sergeant Mark Rabel, who now chairs the monthly East Cambs Problem Solving Group (PSG), has told villagers in recent days of several criminal investigations now under way.

He said: “We have been busy in your area over the last couple of weeks in relation to Phase 4 of the Littleport Policing Plan of targeting specific criminality.”

The plan was introduced by joint councils, community safety partnership and Cambridgeshire Constabulary in response to increased crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in Littleport.

Sgt Rabel added: “There are a small number of recidivists who seem to be persisting in their behaviour – these people are now under a lot of scrutiny by our team.

“During the last two weeks we have instigated formal proceedings against six Littleport residents that have been causing public concern.”

Over the last two weeks in Littleport:

• A juvenile has been reported for court in relation to animal cruelty.

• A juvenile has been charged with assault.

• Two adult males have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and fraud and are currently under investigation.

• Two adult males were also arrested for burglary, charged, remanded and received custodial sentences.

Police say they are sharing information with other agencies including housing providers as criminal and anti-social behaviour will likely have an effect on tenancies.

Sgt Rabel added: “We are already grateful that the Littleport community is reporting information and we really would encourage everyone in your community to continue to report incidents.”

The PSG membership consists of fire, ambulance, registered social landlords, East Cambs District Council (with departments from housing, environmental health, traveller liaison and licensing), inclusion services, the Early Help Team, youth offending service, social services and education with representation from the village colleges.

Collectively the PSG identify individuals who are at risk of criminality or vulnerability and work together to provide a holistic multi-agency approach to safeguard the individual / community.
