ELY'S firefighters have laid down their ping pong bats and donated their old table tennis table to Littleport Youth Club.

Phil Malkin, club manager, said: "We've been having round-robins since it came in last week. I'm surprised how quickly the kids picked it up."

Now the youth centre, which receives no money from the county or parish council, is on the hunt for a league size pool table.
