COUNCILLORS will meet this week to consider the introduction of bulk delivery of black and clear plastic sacks to improve the refuse and recycling service to residents in East Cambridgeshire.

The move is designed to ensure people throughout the district receive a year's supply of the black refuse sacks and clear sacks for the plastic bottle kerbside recycling all at once.

The aim is to tackle the complaints which have been made by residents who have not received replacement sacks after their waste and recycling has been taken away.

The proposal will be discussed at a meeting of East Cambridgeshire District Council's Environment and Transport Committee today (Thursday). Also on the agenda will be a discussion of the revised Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy - designed to reduce the waste sent to landfill and increase recycling throughout the county.

Cllr David Brown, waste champion at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "Following a review of the current contract, we have looked at bringing in a number of measures to improve the waste and recycling service for our residents. One of these is by introducing bulk delivery of all the black and clear sacks each household needs for one year. This, we believe, will end one of the major criticisms we often hear from residents who feel they miss out during the collections.

"By bringing in the kerbside collection of plastic bottles, we have ensured hundreds of thousands of bottles have been recycled and not dumped in landfill. As members of RECAP (Recycling in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough), we have a target of recycling 40 per cent of our waste by 2010, this is something which we are working hard to achieve. It is vital that as we give local residents the weekly waste collection they asked for, we do all we can to improve our recycling thorough reducing the rubbish you put in the black sacks while increasing the glass, paper, organic waste and plastic recycling we do."
