Free car parking in Ely is set to be promoted as part of a £17,000 initiative by East Cambs District Council.

Cash generated by Ely Post Office for rent of temporary accommodation provided by the council at Newnham Street car park will be used to fund the promotional campaign aimed at attracting more shoppers and visitors to the city in the run up to Christmas.

The temporary accommodation has been provided under licence from November last year to December 5 this year and the rent will generate £17,000 of income - £10,000 has been budgeted for but the remainder is extra.

The council provides free car parking across the district and it is hoped the proposed campaign will have three key elements including better advertising alongside events and initiatives in Ely, better signage at entrances to Ely and also within car parks.

Councillors at Wednesday’s (November 12) Commercial Services Committee meeting are expected to agree that the council’s chief executive can use the excess income from the Post Office licence and any additional expenditure up to a total of £17,000 will be funded from any district underspending in 2014/15.
