COUNCIL officials have flagged up their new controversial parking restrictions across the district - and got them wrong.

Signs have been altered in the city centre car parks declaring the new regime will cover parking every day.

But, in fact, Sundays and Bank Holidays are exempt from the restrictions.

Officials have been quick to point out that the signs are only temporary and that the permanent ones will give the correct information.

Campaigners, however, have fought for residents' parking permits claim it sums up the whole parking issue.

Protester Valerie Bent, of Broad Street, said: "I think this reflects how careless they seem to be as the supporting schedule clearly states Monday to Saturday."

John Hill, East Cambridgeshire District Council chief executive, said: "The temporary sign at the Barton Road car park contained an error which stated that the 23-hour restriction applied on all days - this should have said except Sundays and Bank Holidays. We are checking all the signs and will correct any errors. We apologise for the mistake and will make sure the permanent signs will be correct.

"The signs were only temporary and put up to make people aware of the new parking regulations which will not be enforced until mid- February. Our Town Centre Rangers have been advising car park users of the new regime, handing out flyers and posters and receiving positive feedback on the new changes."
