Bin men and street cleaners from waste giant Veolia will continue to operate in East Cambridgeshire after councillors agreed to extend the company’s contract.
Councillors on East Cambridgeshire District Council’s regulatory and support services committee extended Veolia’s terms for a further three years.
Veolia won a seven-year contract in 2008 which was due to expire in March next year – but there was an option to extend for a further four years to 2019.
The council launched a study in 2012 to explore alternatives to Veolia, but the study discovered that the cheapest alternative would cost taxpayers at least £800,000 more per year.
Dave White, the council’s waste strategy team leader, recommended extending Veolia’s contract for a further three years – with prices fixed at the current level.
The contract could have been extended by four years but Veolia told the council it did not want to commit at this stage.
