PLANS to combine two fire stations in East Cambridgeshire into a new state-of-the-art unit have received public support, according to a consultation.
But more than 100 villagers have objected to the plan by signing a petition.
Cambs Fire and Rescue Service wants to combine Burwell and Swaffham Bulbeck fire stations into a single station in Burwell, with additional community amenities.
In total, 152 people responded to an eight-week consultation by Cambridgeshire Fire Authority and 88 per cent of those agreed with the plan.
The fire service also received a petition this week signed by 127 residents of Swaffham Bulbeck who want to retain a station in the village.
A fire service spokesman said: “Both the consultation results and the petition will be handed to members of the fire authority to assist them in making a final decision on whether to combine the two stations at its meeting on October 11.”
Both fire stations are considered unfit for purpose and Swaffham Bulbeck’s fire engine is unable to attend incidents due to crewing shortages.
