FOLLOWING a church conference and day of prayer on Saturday, Sunday's service began a new series of looking at our values. Paul Coghlan led worship. In the evening Rob Booth led worship and the Rev Gordon Lowman spoke on a passage from Genesis.

The Olive Tree

DURING Sunday's worship the Pastor spoke on the armour of God, showing how relevant this provision is to our daily lives.

Ely & District Archaeological Society

A TALK on The Three Blackbirds, from medieval hall house to 20th Century pub by Anne Holton - Krayenbuhl, author and local historian is being held on January 18 at 8pm in the New Room, Methodist Church, Chapel Street, Ely. Visitors �2 - members free.

This will be followed, at 9pm, by the launch of the revised publication of Ms Holton-Krayenbuhl's book, The Three Blackbirds, by the Ely Society Publications Sub-Committee. Copies of the book and of the earliest known map of Ely will be on sale.

Fenland History on Friday

MEETINGS held at Ely Library from10.30am to noon. This is not a formal

club or society, just meetings for anybody interested in the local area.

On January 15 Mike Petty talks on Dickensian Fenland: Hard Times, Bleak Houses. January 22: Mike Young on Aerial photography of the Fens and on January 29 Jon Edney on Old Willingham: the Dennis Jeeps pictorial archive and more.

Ely Group CSRF

THE Christmas Lunch at the Almonry marked the end of a successful and entertaining 2009. The first meeting in 2010 is on January 19, when Margaret Haynes will be talking about 'Haunted Ely'.

In February, the Group AGM will immediately follow the meeting on February 23. The Group urgently needs volunteers willing to join the committee and take it into 2011. If you think you can help, give Joyce or Peter a call on the number below or just turn up to a meeting.

The group meets at 2pm for 2.30pm at the City of Ely Community College in Downham Road and welcomes all retired civil servants, partners and friends.

Baptist Chapel

THE Sunday morning service was taken by Rev Richard Lewis. Joyce, Alan, David and Josh were the musicians. David welcomed everyone and gave out the notices. The Home Group will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The service began with Rev Lewis reading Psalm 47, followed by a hymn and prayer. The offering was taken up by Rachel and Gabrielle. Rev Lewis spoke to the children about promises. The theme for his sermon was Magi and the Three Wise Men, followed by prayer. David welcomed Sylvia into the membership, followed by a prayer and Holy Communion.

Saturday: 7pm - Healing Service.

Sunday: Joint service at the Holy Trinity Church.

Sunday (24): Morning Service with Mervyn Crawford.

St George's Church

ON Sunday the vicar presided and preached at the 8am Holy Communion. She also presided at the 10am Parish Eucharist, during which the plough was blessed (this being Plough Sunday). Jane Harris delivered the sermon.

The Vine Community Church

LIVELY, non-denominational Christian church meeting at the Regal in Hempfield Road. We are always pleased to welcome visitors or new residents of the area.

Sunday's morning service at 10.30am will be led by our pastor, Don Gee. Groups will be meeting during the week in people's homes, providing opportunities for prayer and encouragement.

Warm up first with a cup of tea or coffee before the service, from 10.15am onwards, if you wish. The cr�che for the youngest children is open from 10.15am and older children enjoy a separate meeting during the second half of the service. Afterwards, please join us for refreshments and a chance to chat.

We are planning an exciting range of events during 2010. Our Church New Year's Party will take place on January 30 and we expect to welcome as our special guests Joe and Sos Gaddis and their family from Italy. There will be a week at Sizewell Hall on the Suffolk coast in August.

Littleport, Ely and District Spiritualist Church (LEADS)

THE service is open to everyone and entry is free.

It is held at the village hall, Victoria Street every Thursday unless stated in the newspaper or on the website.

Doors open at 6.30pm for healing which ends at 7.20pm. This is free to all

who would like to have healing, but please arrive early as the Healers are very busy and do not wish to disappoint those who are in need.

The Divine Service begins at 7.30pm. This week psychic artist Victoria Neal will attend.

The following week, January 21, Richard Bartholomew returns.

There is a raffle and a goodwill collection, all donations welcomed. The evening is closed with tea/coffee and light refreshments again for which there is no charge and all are welcome.

St George's Church

SUNDAY'S service was a joint one with St James, Stretham but due to inclement weather the congregation had a brief informal service around a Sabbath meal. The traditional Plough service has been postponed until later.

Sunday: the service at 9.30am will be Holy Communion and Rev Margaret Harper will be celebrant.

On Tuesday evening at 6pm the hymn singers will meet at the church. All welcome.

Baptist Church

SUNDAY: Morning Service with Pastor Tudor Parsons.

The next coffee morning will be at 10am on January 20.

Girls Brigade will be as usual at 6pm on January 15. All newcomers welcome.

Methodist Church

SUNDAY'S service at 10am was led by Ian Weatherall. There was no service at 5pm.

Sunday: service at 10am will be the annual Covenant service led this year by Rev Barbara Garwood. There is no service at 5pm.

The next Coffee Morning is on January 29 at Byways in Barcham Road.

On February 6 there is a Tea Dance in aid of Soham Methodist Church. Please note the new venue is Berrycroft Methodist Hall.

St Peter's Club

AT the club's Christmas dinner Mr Dodson and his wife Anthia were guests and Mr Dodson said grace before the meal. The new year party programmed for January 12 will now take place February 2, weather permitting.
