Methodist Church

THE stewards welcomed the congregation to morning worship and notices before the start of the 10.30am service with Rev Barbara Garwood. Her address was 'for the love of God'. Offerings were taken, hymns sung and Holy Communion celebrated. The evening service was led by Ken Brown.

Thursday: 12pm - 1.30pm - Shoppers' Lunch.

Saturday: 10am-12pm - Coffee Morning in the New Room.

Sunday: 10.30am - Pentecost service with Colin Nickless; 6.30pm - evening service with Rev Bernard Arnold Brown. Musicians will be Donald Monk and Sarah Ballard.

New Connexions @ High Barns

SUNDAY'S theme was Jesus ascending to heaven, but assuring us he will one day return to earth. The children thought of it as Jesus being like a boomerang and returning to us, rather than a frisbee which stays far away! Next week we'll be thinking more about the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

We meet on Sundays at St Mary's School Theatre for church and children's club with a friendly, informal atmosphere.

The Olive Tree

SUNDAY morning's worship included Holy Communion, when we prayed for a greater understanding of what we have been saved from and saved into. Tim Frost spoke of the life of St Peter, noting that at some point he had died to self, and so must we - and we must die to the negative as well. This was part of an ongoing process of preparation for Pentecost when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Sunday service: 10.30am - Pentecost Celebration.

Friday: the Open Door Caf� will offer refreshments and a place of welcome from 10am until noon. All are welcome at these events.

Countess Church

ON Sunday morning the minister, Rev Gordon Lowman, brought us the message of Jonah's prayer, with worship led by Louise Lomax. Messy Church followed the story of Jonah, with more than 60 adults and children joining in activities, worship and a meal. In the evening the theme was from Psalm 1, God's ideal man, and Rob Booth led worship.

Sunday: is Pentecost Sunday and we welcome everybody to an all-age service and tea called 'it's a celebration' at 5pm.

HADDENHAM

Baptist Chapel

THE service for Whit Sunday was conducted by the minister, the Rev Jim Mullin. The musicians were David, Alan and Josh. David welcomed everyone and gave out the notices. The prayer meeting will be on Monday, House Groups on Tuesday and Thursday. Happy Birthday was sung to Louis.

Jim read Psalm 96, followed by prayers and songs. A video was shown, followed by songs and prayers. The offering was taken by Sarah and Rachel. Jim read from Mark 10, v. 35 to 45. The theme for his sermon was 'discipleships, sons of thunder from grasping to giving'. This was followed by songs and prayer.

Sunday: the three Haddenham churches will join for an Ascension Day service at 6.30pm.

LITTLEPORT

Littleport Ely and District Spiritualists (LEADS)

SERVICE held every Thursday at the village hall, Victoria Street. Doors open at 6.40pm for spiritual healing which ends at 7.20pm. This is free to all who would like to receive healing. The Divine Service begins at 7.30pm to which everyone is welcome.

Special thanks to Colin Anderson who was guest medium for the evening of

May 21. He stood in at the last minute as Angie Morris was unwell.

Thursday: Keith Thompson will be the guest medium.

Next week (June 4) there will be no service.

On June 11, Arthur Wright will be the guest medium.

An evening of clairvoyance will be presented by Theresa Cowlan at the village hall on May 31 starting at 7.30pm. This is a charity evening in aid of Chernobyl Children's Lifeline. Tickets are �5. The mediums will be Barbara Price and Joanne Oxley.

The Psychic Supper has now been arranged for June 18 and tickets are now available from the church or from Wendie. There will be 12 mediums present for the evening.

The Vine Community Church

WE are a lively non-denominational Christian church meeting at the Regal on Hempfield Road in Littleport.

Sunday: service will be at 10:30am with contemporary music worship and the sermon by Pastor Don Gee.

Youth and children's Sunday school is provided during the sermon and our cr�che is open for the little ones throughout the service from 10:15am.

After the service we welcome you to stay for coffee, tea, and fellowship

Sunday evening there will be a praise music service at 6:30 pm.

We had our family/wedding vow renewal/dedication celebration service on Sunday.

The Salvation Army

THE meeting on Sunday was led by Sister Maureen Caddy. Major John Boyd will lead the Sunday meeting celebrating Pentecost at 10.30am on May 31, commencing with an 'Upper Room' time of tea and fellowship. This will be John's last meeting before retirement on June 1.

All are invited to join us the following Sunday, June 7, at 11am and 3pm for the installation and welcome of the new officers appointed to ministry in Littleport - Majors Bram and Loraine Holland from Whittlesey.

Flower Arrangement Club

THE demonstrator for the meeting on May 15 was Barbara Boswell from Colchester who had stepped in at short notice. Her theme was 'In the Pink' and six beautiful flower arrangements were produced in a predominantly pink colour scheme including roses, lilies, gerbera and carnations. Most of the arrangements were in a traditional style set within lovely containers. Mrs Boswell also shared many flower arranging tips. The vote of thanks was given by chairman Pam Hayes. A plant stall raised more than �60 for the club's charity of the year, the Macmillan Cancer Support.

The next meeting on June 19 will be a demonstration, called 'mad about plants', by Jenny Baker.

Baptist Church

WHO is Jesus? was the title of an inspiring and challenging service on Sunday morning conducted by Brian Mills. Linda Mills read from Mark's gospel.

Sunday: the service at 10.30am will be conducted by the Rev Glynn Jones. The Girls' Brigade will not meet this week due to half-term holiday.

Tuesday: at 10am there will be a Coffee Morning in aid of the Friends of the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely.

SOHAM

Methodist Church

THE worship on Sunday morning was led by George Ginn. In the afternoon the congregation joined the annual carnival weekend Open Air service on the Recreation Ground, arranged by Soham Churches Together.

Sunday: worship at 10am will be led by the Rev Edwin Myers and will include the celebration of Holy Communion.

Friday: Ann and Sarah Willett are holding their monthly Coffee Morning at Byways, Barcham Road, Soham, from 10am until 12pm. All are welcome. Proceeds to Soham Methodist Church.

Heartbeat Health Walk

ON Monday, May 11, Laurie Budd was the leader for the 38 walkers who took part in the walk of about three miles around Soham. A stop was made at The Ship or Saucy Megabytes for refreshments.

The Phoenix Club

JANNICE Kinnear welcomed members to the meeting held at Keith Leonard House on Wednesday, May 13. The speaker for the meeting was the Methodist minister Edwin Myers who gave an informative illustrated talk on life in South Africa and how he came to be a minister. He was thanked by Jannice. Jill Powley organised the raffle, Viv Hancock collected the money for the outing in June and refreshments were served. The speaker at the next meeting on June 10 will be Richard De Horsey.

Over 60's Club

RUTH Ginn welcomed everyone to the meeting on Friday afternoon. Members enjoyed an interesting and amusing talk on Old Fen Boys given by Vernon Place. Ruth thanked him for a lovely afternoon and invited him to make a return visit to the club. Vera Seal organised the raffle, Peggy gave out the notices, and the ladies served tea and biscuits. The meeting closed with the singing of the club hymn.

STRETHAM

Over 60's Club

TWENTY eight members enjoyed a pleasant afternoon playing bingo in the church hall on Wednesday. Tea and biscuits were served by Jean East, Louise Lewin, Dorothy Perry and Patrick Spencer. A raffle was held. Rhubarb was auctioned, with proceeds going to the club funds. Birthday greetings were sung for Beryl Logan, Shirley Goode and Dick Phillips. The meeting closed with the club anthem.

WARDY HILL

THERE were five tables in play at the dominoes held on May 15 in the social club when Mrs M Dewsbery was MC. Winners were: Mrs O Newell, Mrs P Martin, Mrs J Crown, Mr L Newell, Mrs G Faux, Mrs A Houghton, Mrs S Saberton and A Bell. THERE were four tables in play at the whist drive held on May 18 in the social club when Mrs M Dewsbery was MC. Sausage Supper

VILLAGERS and friends gathered in Wardy Hill Social Club on May 9 for a sausage supper. After enjoying the meal they played a variety of games, the winners being: First - Caroline Poulton and Margaret Dewsbery; Second - Bernice and Edmund Chapman; third - Ethel and Henry Ashman. Consolation: Ryan Robins and John Hines, and Rene Greagg and Frank Tall. The evening finished with a draw.
