Contentious plans for 100 new homes in Haddenham look set to go before East Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee.

County councillor for Haddenham, Bill Hunt, who is an opponent of the scheme, has requested that the decision for the plans be taken out of the hands of officers and put before a committee of councillors.

Cllr Hunt said: “This site is outside the building envelope and therefore conflicts with our policies. I am the county council member for Haddenham and oppose this inappropriate overdevelopment.”

Cheshire-based developer Gladman, wants to build the 100 new homes off Wilburton Road.

The company’s plans concern almost eight acres of land that is currently open space and, as well as 100 houses, Gladman also intends to build a play area and public space complete with “recreational facilities”.

According to the company, 30 per cent of the new properties will be affordable housing.

As well as the proposed Haddenham development, Gladman also has planning applications in for housing developments in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Essex, Cheshire, Oxfordshire and Derbyshire and nearby Witchford.

In consultation with the council, Michael Brogan, of Aldreth, said: “This area has been the subject of refused planning applications in the past, why should any change to this policy be made now?”

And Alan Henderson, of Haddenham, added: “The properties would detract from the current view, build on arable land, concentrate properties onto an area which has the potential to flood and provides a change to the boundaries of the village.

“It would extend Haddenham closer to Wilburton and has the potential to allow the amalgamation of the two villages.”
