Every village in England has its personalities and Littleport is no exception.

Take Mike Goodall for instance. A rock and roll guitarist in his youth, electronics expert in his working life, and who, now retired, makes sure that his fellow villagers know what week it is for which colour bin to put out and what the weather for that week is going to be.

He is now adding to that information service on the popular social networking forum, Littleport Notice Board, with his ‘handy tips’ for fixing stuff.

The parish council held their first ‘village surgery’ at the village hall last Saturday. It seemed somewhat surreal, as lots of people who converse on that LNB site in cyberspace were present; like Phil Robinson who was determined to get his mobility problems addressed by those responsible for Littleport residents’ welfare. He can’t even negotiate short journeys on his pavement scooter around the village, never mind the gradient of the ramp to the station platforms being unassailably steep. He was happier when he left! And he is teaming up with wheelchair users’ rights campaigner Maria Stableford to make sure it’s followed through.

New Littleport history is being made with new businesses starting up, and as more houses get built. And with that expansion, many new people are coming in from the wider community, from different heritages and religions. A good example; the caring owners at St George’s Independent Pharmacy in Parsons Lane.

All Littleport people know how to enjoy themselves in their spare time - and there is always plenty on offer.

This weekend the leisure centre has ‘Prize Bingo’ at 6.30pm on Saturday night, the Ex-Servicemen’s has Take Two, and the Crown Inn has Big Cheese. Sunday you can spend an afternoon there with Mark Josef from 3 until 6pm. The Plough and Harrow has booked The Snatch for April 1.

Tuesday April 4, the Littleport Society has its monthly meeting at the village hall at 7.30pm. East Anglia writer Rodney Tibbs will give his illustrated talk, ‘Iceland - Hotter than you Think.’ Alternatively there’s a pool competition at the Plough and Harrow at 7.30pm.

And if you like to dine out - or take-away on any day of the week, there are many good eateries, and we now have a new fish and chip shop amusingly called ‘The Codfather.’
