RED Nose Day was a great success on Friday as students from across the county took to ever more enterprising ways of fundraising.

With this year's Comic Relief theme encouraging participants to 'do something funny for money,' eager pupils all gathered in the school hall dressed in their pyjamas and red noses ready for their school dance known as the 'wake and shake.' Wake and Shake has been a morning feature at the school - but this is the first time it has been done in nightwear.

The whole school took part in the dance with a more than 300 raised for good causes.

Meanwhile, pupils at Millfield School in Littleport did their bit for Comic Relief with a 'wacky hair' day which saw pupils bunch, spike, colour, gel, and truss their hair into outrageous styles, raising 170.

The 'wacky hair' theme proved so popular that pupils at St Andrew's School in Soham also took as a part of their Comic Relief activities, raising almost 300.

At King's School in Ely, more than 100 students from Soham Village College, Thomas Clarkson in Wisbech, Witchford and King's Ely, complete with customary red noses, took part in a sponsored indoor rowing event that saw them pitted against one-another in a big-screen virtual race.

Bright and early on Saturday morning, enterprising schoolgirls from Littleport, Harriet Kerridge, Holly Porter, and Katie Crow held a cake stall with Jade Porter and Mai Phomeesiri, outside the Co-op in Littleport. A competition was won by Katie South and the raffle prize went to Wendy Nunn, raising 261 for Comic Relief.

King's Junior School pupils - dressed as superheroes - split their fundraising money of 1,000 between Comic Relief and Africa Aid - the school's chosen charity for 2008-2009. Little Thetford School also took up the theme - with one brave teacher spending a day of lessons dressed as Bananaman.

And at City of Ely Community College, 1,100 was raised from non-uniform day, sponsored silences and car washes.
