You can always rely on Littleport for a quota of feel-good stories.

Take the incident last week when someone didn’t realise they had dropped their change wrapped in their receipt from the Wisbech Road Co-op. It was picked up and handed in, then a message about it was posted on our Littleport Notice Board for that customer to retrieve.

All manner of things, and animals too, get reunited with their rightful owners through the Littleport Notice Board on Facebook. And if people are known not to be online, then someone gets the word out to them. For although the area of the village boundary makes it the largest in England - it is mostly fields outside of the central huddle of houses and roads!

Although the majority of people who live in Littleport have a comfortable enough lifestyle, there is a problem for some who live here who are struggling with the ‘benefits’ system.

But there is even a feel-good factor in that situation too.

Parish councillor Susan Green is one of the doughty organisers of the local independent food bank. Donations have poured in since it began, and not just of food but other necessities as well. Like furniture and household goods, electric kettles and so on. Now Susan has put a call-out on the Littleport Notice Board to its 3,874 members.

Susan says, ”In spite of all the wonderful donations before and after Christmas, our cupboard is looking bare. We now have twice the number of people needing help. Bring your donations to St George’s church on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Not everyone can afford to put their cookers on, so food like instant soups etc., that can be made by just boiling water is welcome. Plus, if you have surplus hot water bottles, please donate them too. We would not be able to operate without your kindness.

The women who administer this community hub on social media, in the tradition of Littleport, are also volunteers. You won’t be surprised then to learn that Susan Green is also an admin and moderator, along with Elaine Constable, Kerrie Gathercole Leadbetter and Julie Lewis.

This weekend Littleportians can relax from their labours, paid or unpaid, and have a ball. The Crown hosts ‘Hi Energy Karaoke’ Saturday night, and Sunday 3-6pm there’s Thomas Bainbridge. The ever-welcoming Plough and Harrow has ‘Blue Thunder’ Saturday from 9pm onwards.
