In this modern technological age it’s good to know that, in Littleport, childhood isn’t all about sitting indoors with an electronic link to the outside world when you aren’t in school.
This half term there are activities provided by the two busy mums, who also run The Port youth initiative, Joanne Coe, ably assisted by Lindsay Cross.
And there is also opportunity for the generations to meet each other and have fun too.
Monday (12) There is rock painting at The Port’s permanent venue, the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Ponts Hill. This starts at 11am until 1pm and as Joanne points out, it’s for everyone from one year old, to a hundred and one. £1.50p on the door to this welcoming drop-in session that they call, ‘Littleport Rocks!’
On Tuesday the magic show and disco is already sold out of its 80 tickets, but there’s still the Bingo on Friday the sixteenth, and its £3 per player, with lots of good prizes that have been donated, also from 11am to 1pm.

The kids from The Port also did what the cognoscenti call kniffiti art; that is, they ‘yarn-bombed’ a bicycle and left it decorating the corner of Main Street.
After 2 weeks it disappeared. But this is a village that sleeps with one eye open, and it was spotted being wheeled along by a chap; then Cathy found it left in a hedge and put it in for safekeeping to the Swan on the River - only for perhaps the same person who took it originally, to climb over the gate and take it on a walkabout again!
But it was abandoned down Victoria Street, and from there a mystified Joanne and husband Andy collected it, and it’s now on display in The Port’s room at the Club.
Looking ahead, Sunday 25 from 2-4pm Littleport Timebank, with Littleport’s Adams Heritage Centre, is presenting a bird box making afternoon. Children under 12 must be with a responsible adult, and Deborah Curtis-Watson says everyone should wear clothes they don’t mind getting splodged with paint, glue, varnish and other crafting necessities!

Grown-ups can boogie on down to the Numbers Band at the Plough & Harrow Saturday night from 9pm., and the Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Ponts Hill has a Valentine’s event, 8.45 until late. Friday at the Crown, Big Al entertains, and Sunday afternoon, 3-6pm., it’s Freddie Hall.
