Well I expect you’ve had it up to here as they say with talking about last week’s weather.

But there were some heart-warming stories to come out of all that disruption to our daily lives.

What we used to call the spirit of the blitz in World War Two.

And harking back to that time, although Littleport wasn’t bombed, lots of its people went off to join the fight-back and privation was a nation-wide experience.

So as you would expect, Littleport rose to the occasion, with people making sure their neighbours were alright for supplies, and the shops and service providers open for business as usual.

One of those shops, the Main Street Co-op, went over and above the call of duty, when they offered free salt to clear pathways to schools and care homes.

And although Co-op team leader Garry Hunt told people when he posted the kind offer on the community’s volunteer-produced Facebook page, Littleport Notice Board, “sorry we can’t deliver,” he decided to take the salt to those who requested it himself.

And all the scheduled activities that go on every week, also refused to succumb to the difficult weather conditions; epitomising that old wartime affirmation ‘are we downhearted? No’.

This week everything has been getting back to normal after the big chill, just like it did at the end of hostilities.

Last weekend, if you were lucky enough to be out and about in the evenings, there was plenty to warm you up in the hostelries and restaurants.

Another way of keeping warm is taking part in sporting exercise of some kind. And there’s plenty of that going on in the village.

Sophie Edwards, of ‘Let’s get moving East Cambridgeshire’, promotes various physical activities.

Like the Walking Netball Club that met again after a week off - much to the delight of the members that get together every Wednesday evening from 7-8pm at Littleport Leisure Centre.

And this Saturday, March 10, Littleport Basketball Club Zalgiris, hosts a benefit 3x3 tournament in aid of player Marius Petkus, who was seriously injured in February. Teams of four players give a minimum of £20 each to enter, and a maximum of 16 teams can play.

The court opens at 5pm. There’s a raffle with prizes donated by Littleport Leisure, and all the money goes to Marius.
