Littleport has a proud heritage of strong-minded and determined people. And you could say this is reflected in its sporting endeavours. Win or lose, it’s the game’s the thing.
Last weekend Littleport’s young footballers did the village proud. Coach David Harley (a famous name in these parts) saw his under 16s beat Ely Crusaders 7-1. And the Under 13s clobbered Mildenhall 5-2, courtesy of a hat-trick by Louie Harley. Both matches were played on home turf at the leisure centre.
I tend to write to you about topical goings on in Littleport, things that have happened in the past week, or are going to take place in the week following this newspaper’s publication date.
But in amongst all that stuff of the moment, something is coming up on Friday, October 13, for which you will need to book in advance. Derek Timbers’ Children in Need Disco is at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, and tickets cost £5 for adults and £2 for under 15’s. Call 07867 906026.
Coming back to this Saturday night at the club, they’ve got ‘Around Midnite’ - a five-piece band playing music from the 60s through to the 2010s. Tickets sold on the door from 7.30pm, members £5 and guests £7.
Littleport’s Elvis fans are well served the same night as there’s an Elvis tribute by Ian Coulson at the Plough & Harrow between 9pm and midnight.
On Tuesday October 10 the WI is at the village hall from 7.15pm, presenting Ruth Sindell and Brush Embroidery Icing.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, from 3.45-4.45pm at Littleport Library, the Lego Club meets thanks to its enthusiastic volunteers, and this month’s theme is ‘robots’.
Littleport has a thriving Neighbourhood Watch membership, and last Saturday, was represented at the Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch AGM at Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s HQ. Myself and Timebank members Cathy Gibb de Swarte and Kathy Ingram of Littleport Life magazine represented the village scheme.
Caline Easey, Littleport and Ely Timebank co-ordinator, told me there is a ‘twiddlemuff making workshop’ at Adams Heritage Centre in Main Street on Saturday November 4 at 2pm.
She said: “These can help someone with dementia by providing stimulation for restless hands. We are knitting them to deliver before Christmas. Everyone is welcome.”
