AN arson attack at a golf club in Ely caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and left the club house destroyed.

The blaze started at the On Par Driving Range at about 5.45pm on Friday and quickly took hold, leaving the clubhouse gutted and the contents destroyed.

Four fire crews, from Ely, Littleport and Soham, were called to tackle the blaze and remained at the scene for more than four hours.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the fire was started deliberately.

Speaking moments after arriving at the scene on Saturday, club owner Graham Moore, told the Ely Standard: “I just don’t know what to say, I’ve flown back from holiday to this.”
