A clean-up operation is under way after an illegal rave on the outskirts of Burwell, on Saturday.

Police believe up to 1,000 revellers took part in the rave at Burwell Fen barn, between Wiers Drove and Hythe Bridge, which started on Saturday and lasted almost 24 hours.

Suffolk police and the force helicopter were also called in to help officers from Cambridgeshire manage the event.

Police said there were no arrests made and no reports of any damage.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: “Following an assessment of this incident and the location we made a decision to maintain a police presence and review the situation regularly rather than trying to stop the rave and move on around 1,000 people.

“We understand these incidents have an impact on the local community and did consider this when making this decision.

“We also ensured we consulted with the land owner so they understood the rationale for our actions.”

Burwell Fen was acquired by the National Trust in 2001 as part of its 100-year Wicken Vision, which it hopes will see a ‘green lung’ of land stretching between Wicken and Cambridge.

John Hughes, a senior ranger at Wicken Fen, said it would take “a few days” to get everything back in order following the rave – which finally came to an end at about 3pm on Sunday.

Mr Hughes posted on Twitter: “The footpaths and cycle routes are all open as normal. Lots of rubbish bagged up by the revellers but a lot more to go.”
