The City of Ely Council has set up a Cemetery Expansion Working Group to look into finding new areas for burials.
The group will look for locations either within the current cemetery boundaries or in an alternative location within the parish according to a report from the City of Ely Council’s cemetery committee.
The group’s work will be reported back to the council in the year 2018-19.
Councillor Chris Phillips, chairman of the recreation and cemetery committee, said: “The city council is fortunate to have a dedicated team of workers who, under the leadership of Richard Delahaye, have worked throughout the year to ensure that a high standard of care and maintenance has been achieved.”
The committee’s report adds that the vandals responsible for damaging the windows of Ely Cemetery’s chapels late one evening in July 2017 were handed a programme of community service.
“It is hoped that the windows will be repaired as soon as possible so that the chapels might again look their best for those attending funerals and for other visitors to the site,” Mr Phillips added.
