ELY'S Jubilee Gardens have won a prestigious Green Flag award for being among the best parks and green spaces in the country for the third year running.

Opened in 2002 by Prince Phillip to mark the Queen's Jubilee, Jubilee Gardens were judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained, with the strong involvement of the local community.

The impressive Jubilee Gardens with beautiful riverside setting and magnificent Cathedral backdrop incorporates trees, flowers, sculptures and a bandstand, providing a community facility for a wide variety of outdoor events such as fetes, fairs and open-air concerts.

Councillor Peter Cresswell, chairman of the community services committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "To win this award again is an amazing achievement. It is a reflection of the hard work of the council's Parks and Open Spaces Team working in partnership with the Friends of Jubilee Gardens. The team take great pride in maintaining area to such a high standard but they are driven by the enjoyment that the general public get from walking around the garden."

The judges rated the gardens as follows: "Jubilee Gardens are a major asset to East Cambridgeshire and are enjoyed by local residents, visitors and tourists alike. The gardens form part of a green corridor linking the river Great Ouse through parkland to the historic city centre.
