BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter, Christopher South, was at Burrows Book shop in the city to celebrate his latest volume called the Customs and Folklore of Grunty Fen.

The radio DJ, who confesses that his post-Beatles era knowledge is non existent, met young and old readers alike to sign books and chat.

Christopher has been a journalist for 58 years and has been with Radio Cambridgeshire for 28 years. He has interviewed everybody from royalty and prime ministers to a man who lived in a drain.

His book is the third of his investigations into the world of Grunty Fen. This time, he looks into the traditions, attitudes and behaviours of the Fen folk.

From place names to pylons, from sport to superstition, from weddings to winnings and everything in between.

Christopher said:”For the best part of 30 years I’ve been imagining a crazy fen village. For 17 years I did it on the wireless with Pete Sayers who invented Dennis of Grunty Fen. Then he died quite young. But you lot wanted more so I took to books.

“The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen fooled quite a lot. Then came the Who’s Who with its gallery of improbable people.

“Now, for Pete’s sake really, I’ve come up with the lavishly illustrated The Customs and Folklore of Grunty Fen.”
