THE main road through Soham was the scene of lots of activity last weekend as the town readied itself for the Christmas season. On Saturday, Robert Peacock and his volunteers from the Soham Association of Commerce and Trade strung coloured lights across the street from Cross Green southwards. The group had to stop work for a while when the heavens opened and it was unsafe to continue. The work was completed in the dry on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, members of the Soham Staploe Rotary Club collected the town's annual gift from the Chippeham Estate in the form of a large Christmas tree. As usual the tree was erected on the forecourt of the Blue Donkey offices. This year, as before, the club members will be collecting under the tree each Saturday in December for the MAGPAS First Responders scheme in Soham. An added attraction on Saturday, December 16, will be carols under the tree sung by the children of the Weatheralls and St Andrew's primary schools at 10.30 am.
