Christmas cards turn into cash for Ely Foodbank

More than a tonne of Christmas cards were converted into cash to help Ely Foodbank

The money was raised after Ellgia Recycling teamed up with East Cambridgeshire District Council to create collection points at Ely, Littleport and Witchford.

The collection points meant residents could drop off Christmas cards for recycling, as well as any food they wished to donate.

Joe Rudd, sales director of Ellgia Recycling, said: “The money raised from our campaign will help us to make a big difference to local families who need the support.”

Karl Relton, of Ely Foodbank, said: “We’re always amazed by the goodwill of local people, especially at Christmas time, but please remember that people need support all year around, so any donations you can make, whatever the month, will be much appreciated.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to recycle their cards or drop off food at a collection point. Every penny really does make a difference.”

All organisations and individuals can collect and give food, which can be delivered to collecting points at Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s or to the box close to the shop in the Cathedral.

Alternatively, collected food can be delivered to The Countess Church on Chapel Street, Ely, on Tuesday’s between 11am and 12.30pm or on Friday’s between 1pm and 2.30pm.
