PUPILS from the Rackham Primary School in Witchford were in record-breaking form as they made it through to the semi-finals of the Primary Schools Chess Championship last weekend.

The youngsters competed in the national zone of the championships, taking on the best and brightest from the North region at the event held in Grimsby.

The Under-9 team won all five of their matches over the day and finished 10 points clear of their nearest rivals, a record for the competition. The Under-11 team also performed well as they took top spot in their section to make it through to the national finals.

Headteacher and coach Sid Wales said: "Both teams set off at a very high standard of play and just kept it going the whole tournament.
