A fundraising event will be held at an Ely golf course to raise money for a defibrillator after two golfers tragically died on site.

On Par Golf Club in Downham Road will be holding the open charity day on Saturday (September 1).

Owner Graham Mawe says that a defibrillator could be lifesaving after witnessing two of his customers die from a heart attack.

Mr Mawe, 57, who set up On Par 18 years ago, also underwent heart surgery four years ago.

He said: “I know the complications that heart problems can bring.

“Sadly two guys died on the course a few years ago, so this has been something that has affected our customers a lot.

“It is extremely sad that a golf course has remembrance benches, so we want to do what we can to prevent anything like that happening in the future.

“Currently there is a defibrillator situated by the Rugby Club, but we would have to go across there and get a code for it and then drag it across.

“Although our staff are medically trained, our own defibrillator would be perfect as most of our customers are seniors.”

Money will also be raised for the British Heart Foundation during the day, with live entertainment from local bands on the night.

The event will start at 2.30pm with live music from 3pm, various stalls, competitions, a bouncy castle, gin and cocktail bar and a barbecue.

“Every golf course should have a defibrillator. We have thousands of people come here every week, so this could save lives,” Mr Mawe added.

“There is always a chance that with a defibrillator people could survive if the worse happens.

“So many people are now diagnosed with heart problems and more effort should be given to assist with research, as well as ensuring the correct equipment should be available for those who suffer heart attacks while enjoying their leisure time as well as their daily lives.”

Entry in the day is free but tickets are available for the evening priced at £5 for adults by calling 01353 669192.
