An Isleham based charity that has supported hundreds of amputees across the UK celebrated their third anniversary by welcoming sporting stars to a family fun day.

Steel Bones UK welcomed more than 200 to the event, which had bouncy castles, art and crafts for children, inclusive sports, workshops and holistic treatments.

Inspirational sporting heroes attended, including gold medallist Mercio Fernandes, who lost his leg at the age of 10 after being hit by a train in Portugal.

British Basketball champion Wendy Smith, Team GB Archer Mark Pattenden, 21-year-old Team GB Paralympic and gold medallist Hannah Moore plus Steel Bones Ambassador and GB Para Rower Alice Mason also made an appearance.

The athletes shared their personal stories with the Steel Bones community and took to the stage to answer questions and offer inspiration to fellow amputees in the audience.

Reflexology and Reiki taster sessions were offered by Suzie and Helen Ford throughout the day, to help amputees with alternative relaxation and healing techniques.

Chedburgh Community Choir, provided entertainment with renditions from Forest Gump and Abba.

Guided by their musical director Polly Anderson, Chedburgh has been the chorus for Swansea City Opera Company when their tours of Lakmé (2017) and The Barber of Seville (2018) brought them to Suffolk.

Lunch was provided by outside caterers Allen & Son and Allison’s Eatery and complimentary tea, coffee and cakes were also available.

Prizes were also donated by Tesco, Cineworld, Costa Coffee, Wilkinsons and many more local businesses.

Retail giant Sports Direct, in support of Steel Bones UK supplied single sample shoes, which were made available to amputees on the day.

After entering the Tesco Bags of Help scheme Steel Bones UK were granted £4000 and these funds were set aside specifically for the annual celebration day, making it an event to remember.

Tesco volunteers were also around to help serve refreshments and assist in other areas.

Leigh Joy-Staines, co-founder of Steel Bones UK, said: “We would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of the annual Steel Bones celebration day.

“Thanks to our keynote speakers, all of our volunteers and of course most importantly the attendees in our community, the whole event was a huge success.”
