Changes still needed at Ely rail station, say commuters, as Abellio Greater Anglia prepares to fill vacancies

Staff shortages at Ely rail station are still causing frustration for commuters — despite a vow to take action.

Last month, Abellio Greater Anglia, which manages the station, apologised for the shortages which have resulted in the ticket office regularly being closed at peak times.

Abellio said “every effort” was being made to recruit new staff to help cut the lengthy queues that have caused some rail users to miss trains.

But, more than a month on, commuters say that little has changed at the station.

One said: “Early in the morning, people are queuing out of the main door and it can get very tense if there is a danger of missing a train. I have seen it get out of hand because people are fed up. People who want to renew their rail cards are also being given incorrect advice and told to go all the way to Downham Market. Nothing seems to have changed.”

Staff with mobile ticket machines have been deployed by Abellio to help relieve queues.

A spokesman for Abellio said interviews to fill the vacancies were being arranged. The spokesman did not give a timescale for when new staff would be in place.
