HOMEOWNERS in East Cambs are being advised by the Health Protection Agency to watch out for signs of carbon monoxide poisoning as the winter months arrive and heating systems are used more frequently.
The agency is also urging people to test their gas appliances to ensure that they are safe to use.
Dr Joe Kearney, East of England HPA regional director, said: "Every household should be aware of the risks, particularly at this time of year when people start to use their central heating and gas fires more often."
Carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for 50 deaths a year, according to the HPA.
Gas users are advised that regular checks of appliances are the best way to ensure their safety. These should be carried out by a qualified engineer.
