A DRIVER careered off the road and crashed into a house in Ely on Saturday Morning, causing "massive structural damage" to a Back Hill property.

A Volvo saloon left off the road just after 2am and hit the gas main at the front of the house - thankfully for residents it was not ruptured in the crash.

Cambridgeshire police said a female passenger was taken to hospital as a result of her injuries but the male driver was unharmed.

"The car caused massive structural damage to the house," a spokesperson said.

George Tristram was visiting a friend at the house in Back Hill when the car ploughed into the front of the building.

"We'd heard kids banging around earlier", he said, "but we knew it wasn't them because the entire house shook."

A neighbour said: "I was fast asleep when I heard a skid and a huge bang as the car hit the house."

"When I saw that the car had hit the gas main I thought we would all have to be evacuated in case the whole street went up."

Fire crews ensured the damage had not caused a gas leak and made temporary repairs.

A police spokesperson said that no other vehicles were involved in the incident, and that a 17-year-old boy had been arrested at the scene and was due to appear at Cambridge Magistrates' Court yesterday (Wednesday).

"I would urge anyone with any information about the incident to come forward," she said.
