CHARGES of vehicle theft and vehicle interference were denied by Soham man Gavin Baker

when he appeared in court this week.

Baker, 25, of Churchgate Street, is accused of stealing a J-registered Vauxhall Carlton worth £100 from Martin Carpenter in Soham on January 27, and interfering with the same vehicle.

The date of his trial will be set by the court in four weeks' time, and he was given conditional bail until that hearing.

Baker did admit failing to attend Ely courthouse on October 3, and was fined £50 with £50 costs. Solicitor Michael Judkins said Baker's life had been in turmoil at the time, two of his grandparents had died and he was tackling a heroin problem.

He had since stopped taking drugs because that was his grandfather's wish, and he will get help from the drug intervention programme.
